This lake in Kemeri National Park is one of the best bird-watching places in Latvia. A few hundred meters from the lake is the beach of the Gulf of Riga.
Lake Kaņieris is one of the best bird-watching places in Latvia. A mixed area of wetland, forest, reedbeds and open water. Almost 200 bird species have been observed around the lake. During migration more than 10,000 water birds seek shelter here. Their are bird watching towers and trails to explore the different areas. Interesting is The Reed Trail that is built on pontoons and takes you right into the thicket of reeds. Some of the nice birds of the area you can see are Серощекая поганка, Обыкновенный ремез, Серый журавль, Орлан-белохвост and Обыкновенная чечевица. But many more, see the list below.
Good place to start is The Reed Trail. You can make a circular walk of 3 km there and will pass two observation towers along the way. The trail is shown on the map below. Click on the P on the map to go there directly.
Five miles further on there is another good option to explore the area: the Lake Kaņieris Castle Mound Trail (1.3 km, see the map, click on the P on the map to go there directly) that leads through the forest and a grassy swamp towards the Kaņieris hillfort. A viewing platform is set up at the end of the trail, from which you can overlook Lake Kaņieris.
But exploring other parts of the lake by walking, cycling or car can be also very rewarding.
In Ķemeri National Park all the most beautiful landscapes in the national park are related to the waters. The high-swamp landscapes are unique, with Marsh pines and a maze of winding lakes, both the Kanieris reeds ' maze and the picturesque shores of the deep and river Valguma Lake. There is also a diverse coastal landscape – both Lapmežciems, Bigauņciems and Ragaciema's dense coastline, as well as the miles of wooded dunes.
