The Fucecchio Marshes cover an area of about 1,800 hectares and is the largest inland marsh in Italy.
The Padule di Fucecchio is the largest inland wetland in Italy. The Le Morette trail (percorso naturalistico) to the wetlands will take you through agricultural lands, a small woodland and out to the wetlands and flooded fields. This site makes for an excellent outing particularly to waterbirds, including shorebirds, herons, egrets as well as a nice mix of other birds. Among the birds you can see are Ходулочник, Чибис, Большой веретенник, Турухтан, Перевозчик, Черныш, Щёголь, Большой улит, Фифи, Малая чайка, Чайконосая крачка, Речная крачка, Белый аист, Волчок, Рыжая цапля, Большая белая цапля, Малая белая цапля, Египетская цапля, Жёлтая цапля, Каравайка, Священный ибис, Кваква and Болотный лунь.
The new visitor centre in the community of Castelmartini is an excellent place to stop for information and to see the exhibition. It is generally accessible on Saturdays (2.30pm-5.30pm), Sundays and holidays (9am-12pm and 2.30pm-5.30pm), but is best to check for the latest schedule: http://www.zoneumidetoscane.it/en/aperture-del-centro-visite-e-dellosservatorio. Location: 43.822644, 10.838039
While most easily reachable by car, there are public buses from nearby cities that will get you to Castelmartini. Once you arrive, it is best to walk from the visitor centre where parking is available. The Le Morette trail to the bird observatory is 3,3 km one way. Note: many portions of the lake shore are in private ownership.
The Centre for Research, Documentation and Promotion of the Fucecchio Wetlands (Centro di Ricerca, Documentazione e Promozione del Padule di Fucecchio) is a champion for the conservation of these wetlands as well as running the visitor centre.
Starting in September the hunting season starts, and it is not an ideal time to visit as many of the wetlands are dry until November.
