Description
Gedenkstätte Stresow is a little memorial of World War II located in the Wendland in midst of a lot of nature. Right next to the memorial is a small lake, where you can often see Луток, Большой крохаль and several species of duck in Winter.
A few hundred meters futher there is an observation tower with a nice view over the partially flooded meadows and small bodies of water. In winter they are getting used as a wintering and migration place for thousands of ducks and geese such as Шилохвость, Гоголь, Свиязь, Серая утка, Чирок-свистунок, Чирок-трескунок, Широконоска, Красноголовый нырок, Хохлатая чернеть, Пеганка, Белощекая казарка, Белолобый гусь, Гуменник and Лебедь-кликун. If you are lucky than you can spot a Серый сорокопут in the bushes.
During migration times many waders visit the area. You can observe Чибис, Чернозобик, Галстучник, Малый зуёк, Большой кроншнеп, Большой веретенник, Перевозчик, Бекас, Фифи, Черныш, Щёголь, Травник, Большой улит and sometimes Турухтан. On the water bodies you can sometimes spot grebes such as Серощекая поганка or Малая поганка or see a Обыкновенный зимородок.
For a better look there is a route on the dike through the meadows so you can see the whole area from different sides. In the summer there are many swallows and Серый журавль , herons and Белый аист. Серая цапля and Большая белая цапля are not uncommon, with a bit of luck you even can see a pair of Чёрный аист.
From the power poles, the bushes and out of the reed you can hear the songs of Тростниковая овсянка, Просянка, Обыкновенная овсянка, Серая славка, Камышевка-барсучок, Тростниковая камышевка, Дроздовидная камышевка, Луговой чекан, Черноголовый чекан, Полевой жаворонок and see for example Обыкновенный жулан or Жёлтая трясогузка.
Over the whole year you can spot many different birds of prey. From the observation tower you can see Болотный лунь flying over the reed beds, in the whole area Канюк, Красный коршун and Пустельга обыкновенная are not uncommon. On very good days you can even see a Сапсан or Обыкновенный осоед. Also often seen are Чёрный коршун, Полевой лунь and Скопа and sometimes more down by the river Aland in the trees sit one or two Орлан-белохвост.

Access
Feuchtwiesen Gedenkstätte Stresow is located east of the villages of Kapern and Gummern and north of the village of Aulosen. There are two roads to the memorial Stresow. One is a dirt road from Kapern, safer is the normal road from Aulosen. On the memorial is a parking space, where you can park your car. Press P on the map for directions to the parking. From there it is better to walk or to ride a bike. You can also easily connect the visit with a bike tour through the beautiful landscape of Wendland.
