Description

Marais du Grand Hazé is the largest marsh in the Orne department. The wetland area covers approximately 200 hectares and is classified as a Natura 2000 site due to its ecological significance. The marsh is situated in a basin formed by the hydrographic network, where streams used to accumulate, creating a peat-rich soil. Today, the Marais du Grand Hazé still experiences significant winter flooding and maintains a rich biodiversity.

The landscape includes marshes, peat bogs, deciduous forests, ponds and heathlands. It is home to a wide range of flora and fauna. The marsh is partly managed by extensive grazing with Camargue horses and Highland cattle. Diversity of bird species throughout the seasons. Sometimes vagrants and rarities do show up. Besides birds you can find many dragonflies.
