Description

Lac de Virlay is a former quarry transformed into a Natura 2000 area with beavers, voles and otters. You can take a 4 km walk around it. In July, I observed colonies of at least 250 Египетская цапля, 30 Золотистая щурка and more than 100 Береговушка. I also observed Красный коршун, Обыкновенный зимородок, Средний пёстрый дятел, Иволга and at least 20 Кваква. I was told there is also Удод but I didn't see it. I was only there for 3.5 hours, and in the less interesting month of July. During bird migration the lake should also be interesting to check out. Other birds you can encounter include Ополовник, Черноголовый щегол, Большой пёстрый дятел, Зелёный дятел, Пустельга обыкновенная, Чёрный коршун, Тростниковая камышевка, Южный соловей and Малая белая цапля.

Access

Lac de Virlay is very easy to reach. The best option is the large parking lot on Chemin de Virlain. Press P on the map for directions to the parking. There's also a good paid Park4night for campervans (regular parking is up to 2 meters). There's a terrace, two bakeries nearby, children's activities and pedalos. For birds, go left at the lake, and for recreation, go right :-)

Allow at least 3 hours to explore the lake. 4 to 5 hours is better. I actually think you can spend 1-2 days there and really explore a lot, because further along is the Abbey of Noirlac. If you go in the morning, you'll see foxes, deer, beavers, water voles, a sea of rabbits, and maybe even an otter. There are also bats, probably some rare ones. I'll post them on observation.org, along with the sounds.
