The Bergenmeersen is a nature reserve part of the Flemish Sigma Plan with controlled reduced tide to protect the region from floods.
The controlled tides of the Scheldt river give this birding spot some interesting characteristics. As the Bergenmeersen is quite far inland the brackish water and the tidal movement shape this area in a unique salt marsh and mudflats. During migration periods these mudflats attract wader birds like Большой веретенник , Шилоклювка , Перевозчик , Большой улит , Щёголь , Фифи , Чернозобик. On the wooden path that runs trough the area it's possible to see Обыкновенный ремез and Усатая синица in the reed beds (mostly during winter). Warblers like Обыкновенный сверчок , Варакушка , Камышевка-барсучок and Тростниковая камышевка are easily to be heard from this wooden path during spring and early summer.
Parking can be found at the cemetery of Wichelen. Click on the P in the map to get directions.
