Great place for birdwatching in the gardens and at the adjacent lagoons.
Established in 1869, the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens is one of the oldest public gardens in Australia, spanning 33 hectares of meticulously landscaped grounds. Beautifully maintained with huge trees giving shelter on hot days. Rainforest plants to arid gardens. Beautiful wetlands with many waterbirds which can be watched from a bird viewing shelter. The Murray Lagoon and Yeppen-Yeppen Lagoon are home to more than 100 species of birds. For example Pink-eared Duck, Cotton-pygmy Goose, Australasian Shoveler, Darter, Great-crested Grebe, Little Corella and many more, see the birdlist below.
Rockhampton Botanic Gardens are located at the southern edge of the city and bordered by the Murray Lagoon and Yeppen-Yeppen Lagoon. Free parking is available. Click on the P in the map for directions or coordinates to the parking. From the North: Follow the Bruce Highway over the Fitzroy Bridge heading South, turn right onto Upper Dawson Road, then turn left at Spencer Street.
