Description

There is layby parking on the Newport iron bridge which is a good viewpoint. Look for waders, gulls and terns in autumn/winter - Ploier auriu, Chiră mică, Ploier argintiu, Becațină mică, Becațină comună, Culic mare, Bătăuș, Nagâț, Fugaci de țărm, Nisipar. Corb de mare, shearwaters and Pufin may be seen from the beach, or the cliffs further north, which may also have Vânturel roșu, Stăncuță de munte and Mărăcinar negru. Lăcar mic, Lăcar de stuf, Presură de stuf, breed in the reeds where Egretă mică, Cârstel de baltă and Pescăraș albastru may also feed.

Access

The estuary and adjoining town of Newport, Pembs (not the same as the city of Newport, Gwent in east Wales) are midway between Fishguard and Cardigan, 10 miles from each, on the A487 coast road. Buses every 2 hours. Nearest trains at Fishguard. The south shore walk is 3 km there and back, the north shore and clifftop walk is 4 km.
