Lakes formed by salt extraction started by the Romans, and during the Industrial Revolution today form a mixed habitat of meres, woodland and open heathland.
The variety of habitats has lead to a wide range of birdlife, ranging from Buhai de baltă, Pescăraș albastru, all three British Woodpeckers, abundant grebes, waterbirds and waders, plus raptors that predate on them. May/June has a profusion of warblers and songbirds.
