Large remote commercial forest mostly at 3/400 metres, surrounds the Usk reservoir. Good for churring Caprimulg and roding Sitar de pădure on summer evenings.

Description

Glasfynydd Forest has mostly moorland and woodland species eg Mărăcinar negru, Ieruncă scoțiană, Codroș de pădure, Becațină comună, Becațină mică, Șoim de iarnă, Vânturel roșu and Gaie roșie. In winter Sfrâncioc mare, Forfecuță, Mugurar, Scatiu and Inăriță mică. Few birds on the reservoir but Rață mică, Stârc cenușiu and Ferestraș mare possible. Pescărel negru and Codobatură de munte below the dam. For Caprimulg, look for a recently felled forest area with regrowth of bracken, bramble etc - only active after dark between May and August.

Access

From Swansea take A4067 Tawe valley road then left two miles beyond Danyrogof caves. From A40 Brecon/Llandovery road, turn south from Trecastle. Buses through Trecastle regularly. Train station at Llandovery. The circular walk around the reservoir is 8 km.
