Series of Victorian reservoirs surrounded by mountain and moorland, in upper Wye catchment, supplying water to Birmingham.
Chief habitats in Elan Valley and Gigrin Kites are: streams and open water, frequented by grebes, Pescărel negru and Codobatură de munte. The ancient sessile oak woodland is home to Codroș de pădure, Muscar negru, Pitulice sfârâitoare, Cojoaică de pădure, Uliu păsărar and open moorland containing Ciuf de câmp, Șoim de iarnă, Culic mare, Ploier auriu, Fugaci de țărm, Ieruncă scoțiană, Pietrar sur, Ciocârlie, Mărăcinar negru Erete vânăt and Corb.
Kite feeding station south of Rhayader feeds daily each afternoon. It has a hide and parking. Reservoirs are west of Rhayader and have several car parks, wetland birds usually at top ends. For a circular drive to see 4 of the 5 reservoirs, keep turning right to follow Elan valley. Claerwen reservoir is a dead end for cars.
