Walk alongside Ebbw River and up the lower slopes of Machin Hill through mixed woodland. The walk can be steep and uneven in places.
Blackvein Forest has a varied habitat from mixed managed woodland to scrubland on a steep slope. The river nearby attracts a range of birds from Cormoran mare to Warblers. Owls are often heard. Several springs which come out of the hillside attract a diverse type of wildlife.
Free car parking on Blackvein Road (off B4591) at Crosskeys, walk either alongside the river by the playing fields or under the bridge carrying the A467, turn left onto the logging road where there are several paths along the side of the valley. Or carry on up the logging road towards the summit of Machin Hill.
Several paths lead in different directions ranging from fairly flat to very steep. Habitats range from thick coniferious forest to scrubland with many springs coming out the hillside. Occasional farms bring added interest in attracting extra wildlife.
