Description

In 1980 the lake and mountain of Ichkeul were declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites, then converted into a national park covering an area of 12 500 hectares. The vast body of water is the last trace of a chain of freshwater lakes that once stretched across North Africa. Over 200 bird species have been recorded in Ichkeul National Park and 500 plant species. November to February is the best time to visit. Among the birds you can spot in the area are Flamingo roz, Ciuș, Turturică, Turturică africană, Silvie mediteraneană, Drepnea mare, Drepnea palidă, Ciovlică ruginie, Pasărea ogorului, Șerpar, Pupăză, Prigorie, Vânturel mic, Viespar, Codroș de diamant, Rață cu cap alb, Rață roșie and Frunzăriță galbenă.

There are organised tours, see website Tripadvisor below. Or drive to the site, two/three hours from Tunis, good roads. Car park marked P on map. Nearest train station is at Tinja, 8 km away.
