This shallow lake with abundant reeds is one of Sweden's most important bird lakes. A nature reserve with good birding facilities.
Sjön Östen is a shallow mud-sandlake with nutrient-rich water and abundant vegetation. Around most of the lake there is a belt with rushes and reeds that into land turns into high-grown grass areas. The streams Tidan runs through the lake and the stream Ösan starts in the lake.
Almost all species of geese found in Sweden visit Östen. The lake and surroundings are valuable as a resting place for many wading birds, both at autumn and spring. Here you can see, or hear, unusual breeding bird species such as Becațină mare, Cresteț pestriț, Grelușel pătat, Cristel de câmp and Privighetoare roșcată. And a lot of ducks, waders and geese can be seen. The geese can also be seen grazing in adjacent fields. Among them a lot of Gâscă de semănătură.
The best time for a visit to Östen is March-April, before and during the ice break- up. Bird life can be studied from, among other things, the bird towers and the bird platform. These can be reached from the parking lot at Logården.
Quite easily accessible.
West side: take the car to Logården and park there (click on the P on the map to go there directly). Walk along marked trails through pastures to one of the bird towers. Or to the handicap platform.
Öjetornet (in the NE "corner"): take the car to the parking lot (click on the P on the map to go there directly) and walk along the marked trail north.
Nils-matsgården (SW "corner") take the car road (gravel road) all the way to the lookout point.
The lake and its shores are nature reserves. See map!
