Bird rich ponds next to inland coastal meadows make for a bird rich combination.

Description

The Norsholm area is quite vast and contains many minor sites shortly described here. The areas mentioned are marked with a star on the map. Press on a star and you can see the name of the area.

Grensholmsbron: Winter site with open waters even during harsh winters. Thousands of Rață moțată (at most 2000), hundreds of Ferestraș mic (only numerous during november and december), Rață sunătoare (at most 700), Rață mare (at most 600), and Ferestraș mare (at most 600). Among more rarer wintering birds it is most known for wintering Acvilă de munte, and Pescăraș albastru. Other not yearly winter visitors are Fofecuță bălțată, Mugurar de taiga during invasions, and Corcodel mic, Rață pestriță, Inăriță cu cioc galben, Rață sulițar, Ferestraș moțat, and Inăriță de tundră during birdrich winters.

Norsholms coastal meadows: Reed free coastal meadows which are rich in waders during late spring and autumn. Although only if the water level is right (only during high water). Few arctic waders are found but Fluierar de zăvoi, Prundăraș gulerat mic, Fluierar negru, Bătăuș, Fluierar cu picioare roșii, Becațină comună, Sitar de pădure, Fluierar de mlaștină and Fluierar cu picioare verzi. Fluierar cu picioare roșii, Nagâț, and Becațină comună breed. Egretă mare, Pescăraș albastru, and Ferestraș moțat are common.

Åby strandängar: Reed coated coastal meadows which are flooded during spring floods. They are then usually filled with early waders and ducks. Buhai de baltă can be heard singing. All common dabbling ducks are usually found except Rață cârâitoare. Rață fluierătoare, Rață mare, and Rață pestriță. On these coastal meadows Egretă mare is often found.

Braskens grav: is an oxbow lake of the river Motala ström which often floods making it perfect for waders and ducks. Rață mică is numerous, Fluierar negru, and other common tringa-waders are often found along with Becațină mică. Egretă mare is often found here. Găinușă de baltă, and Lișiță breed.

Åby gård: complex of 3 ponds, the large, the small and fiskaretorpet. It is these ponds and the field around them which Norsholm is most known for. It has a bird observation tower. During spring it holds large amounts of ducks and swans with Lebădă de vară, Lebădă de iarnă, Rață mare, Rață fluierătoare, Rață pestriță, Rață mică, Rață lingurar, Rață moțată, Ferestraș mic, and Ferestraș mare being common and Rață cârâitoare and Rață sulițar, being rarer. Other common wetland birds are Lișiță, Cocor, Stârc cenușiu. Cormoran mare often roost here. Rarer birds roosting are Corcodel mic, Găinușă de baltă, Buhai de baltă (nearby reed areas), and Egretă mare. There are small islands in the pond which hold a small tern and gull colony. Theese islands also hold small amounts of waders often; Culic mare, Fluierar cu picioare roșii, Nagâț, Bătăuș and Fluierar de mlaștină. During early spring the area is great for roosting geese and swans with hundreds of Gârliță mare, Gâscă de vară, Gâscă de semănătură, Gâscă canadiană, and Gâscă călugăriță during good years. often along with smaller amounts of Lebădă mică (rare), Tundra Bean Goose, Gâscă cu cioc scurt, and Gâscă neagră (rare).

Around these ponds Ciuf de pădure, Corcodel mic, Găinușă de baltă, Lebădă de iarnă, Corcodel mare, Gâscă canadiană, Gâscă de vară, Rață mică, Cocor, Nagâț, Becațină comună, Lișiță, Pescăruș râzător, Pescăruș negru, Lebădă de vară, Chiră de baltă, Fazan, Rață moțată, Rață mare, Rață sunătoare, and southern Codobatură galbenă breed along with more common birds.

During autumn large amounts of ducks can rest (but less than during spring). The small islands grow during dry summers and can some years hold arctic waders like Fugaci de țărm, Fugaci roșcat, and Fugaci pitic. Gușă vânătă, and Presură de tundră can sometimes be found on the surrounding fields.
