Next to the Moorish town of Hornachos this small protected mountain range is a fantastic area for birding.

Description

The Sierra Grande de Hornachos is located in the center of the province of Badajoz. The area is an authentic green island and an exceptional natural viewpoint among the great plains that surround it. A steppe meets mountain habitat with birds like Mierlă albastră, Silvie de tufiș, Pietrar negru de stâncă, Ciocârlan spaniol, Coțofană cu aripi albastre, Potârniche cu picioare roșii, Presură sură and Presură de munte. The rocky outcrops are surrounded by thick forest, which represent an ideal environment for a great variety of raptors. On the rocky ridges nest large birds such as Vultur sur and Acvilă de munte and it is also possible to see Acvilă mică, Hoitar, Vultur negru. Sometimes even Acvilă porumbacă and Vultur pătat are seen. Best period to explore the area is in spring.

Espagnol: La Sierra Grande de Hornachos ubicada en el centro de la provincia de Badajoz, se alza entre las comarcas de los Barros, la Campiña y la Serena. Se presenta como una sucesión de resaltes rocosos rodeados de bosque espeso, que representan un entorno ideal para la vida de una abundante fauna; en ella conviven una gran variedad de rapaces y fauna mediterránea en un entorno de bosque espeso de encinar, carrasca y arbustos.

Access

From the town of Hornachos you can explore the area on foot. On the map you see a 9,5 km circular route. But you can also make shorter walks or take shortcuts. In fact almost every path you explore in this area is good for nice birds. Whatever you do: protect yourself against the sun, take enough water and wear long trousers (there are many thorny shrubs) and good walking shoes.

Espagnol: Desde el pueblo de Hornachos se puede explorar la zona a pie. En el mapa ves una ruta circular de 9,5 km. Pero también puedes hacer caminatas más cortas o tomar atajos. De hecho, casi todos los caminos que explora en esta área son buenos para la observación de aves.
