Located in the Maestrazgo, a sparsely populated mountainous area in Aragon, the surroundings of the village of Fortanete offer good birding and hiking.
Fortanete is considered to be the 'Hidden Jewel of the Maestrazgo'. The village is located at 1353 meters and surrounded by two robust mountain ranges: the Sierra de la Cañada and the Tarrascón-Las Lastras. Its natural environment is dominated mainly by high, cool pastures and, above all, by the extensive sessile pine forests. But also orchards, streams and many stone walls. Walking the G8-trail or one of the many trails around the village of Fortanete guarantees observing interesting birds. Among the birds you can observe are Vrabie de stâncă, Sfrâncioc roșiatic, Sfrâncioc mare iberic, Stăncuță de munte, Grangur, Presură de munte, Presură bărboasă, Fâsă de câmp, Pitulice de munte, Potârniche cu picioare roșii, Prepeliță, Pietrar sur, Lăstun de stâncă, Ciocârlie de pădure, Vultur sur, Acvilă mică and Acvilă de munte.
The village of Fortanete is located 70 km northeast of Teruel. There are many trails you can explore in the surroundings of the village. On the map is shown the G8-trail coming from Cantavieja and heading to Valdelinares. A walk full of full of ravines and mountain ranges and rich in birds, especially in spring. In spring you also walk through extensive fields of red poppies standing out against the green of the cereal. Around the village there are many options for longer and shorter walks in the area.
