Situated in the coastal strip, the reserve is composed of an area of about 45 ha, of which 25 ha are permanently flooded. This attracts many birds.

Description

The wetland of Paul de Tornada and the surrounding area makes up a flooded expanse in periods of increased rainfall. This system of ditches, with a south-north flow direction, flows into the Tornada River, which, in turn, flows into the shell of São Martinho do Porto. The wet areas makes it an attractive place for nesting and migratory birds. Among the birds you can see here are Stârc roșu, Găinușă albastră, Mărăcinar mare, Erete de stuf and if you are very lucky the Gușă vânătă which is very rare in Portugal. Access

Highway A8 - Exit at km 86 (node 20), then in the direction of Tornada, via national road N8. The Paul de Tornada Educational EcologicalCentre is about 4 km north of the town of Caldas da Rainha, near the village of Tornada. You can make a circular walk of 3,7 km around the wetland.
