Description
The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like Pescăruș cu picioare galbene, Pescăruș negricios and Pescăruș râzător. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like Culic mic, Pietruș, Nisipar and Fluierar de munte.
The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly Chiră de baltă and Chiră roz, but sometimes also Chiră de mare.
Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of Cory's Shearwater can be observed. Small numbers of Petrel cu coadă ascuțită can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like Ielcovan atlantic mic and Ielcovan pitic.
In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like Pescăruș sur mare, Pescăruș cu aripi albe and, in 2011, a Yellow-crowned Night Heron.
