Description

The Avon and Heathcote Estuary is a coastal wetland located on the eastern edge of Christchurch. It’s where the Avon (Ōtākaro) and Heathcote (Ōpāwaho) Rivers meet the Pacific Ocean, forming a shallow, semi-enclosed estuary that’s rich in birds. A good place to see waders, gulls, and Sacred Kingfisher plus other birds such as Goldfinches.
