Description
"Zandput Culemborg" is an old sand extraction area, consisting of a small lake and is surrounded by a poplar and willow forest. Adjacent to the forest, large pastures draw the landscape. The lake itself isn't a hotspot for waterbirds. Species like Corcodel mare and Rață moțată can be seen. The shoreline and its overhanging branches are a great spot for Pescăraș albastru. The area provides also an important habitat for the Western Clubtail (dragonfly).
The forest is a great spot for observing Grangur in Spring; a scarce species in the area. Several individuals tend to hang around during the breeding season. Other songbird species that can be heard and seen regularly are Muscar sur, Pițigoi de munte, Țiclean and Silvie de zăvoi. Scarcer species that can be seen here are Ciocănitoare pestriță mică and Stufărică. The larger bushes adjacent to the forest and pastures are great for Frunzăriță galbenă and Lăcar de mlaștină.
The pastures provide a good foraging area for Barză albă. They can also be seen resting on the street lights above the highway from here. Another good species in these pastures is Potârniche.
