Description
The heathlands with its protected clay-pits (leemkuilen) and surrounding forest form a unique habitat in the Netherlands that is carefully maintained with a.o. the help of sheep and highland cattle. The area is connected to surrounding nature through tunnels and eco-bridges allowing deer, foxes, badgers, martens and the occasional wolf to travel through. Like most heather habitats, Tafelbergheide is most interesting in summer. You can hardly miss the Mărăcinar negru that breed in the heather. But also Ciocârlie de pădure, Fâsă de luncă and Fâsă de pădure are abundant. During summer evenings one can often see Șoimul rândunelelor hunting over the heatherfields and mid summer there is fair chance to spot Viespar. The forest are full of woodpeckers, black, green and all 3 spotted woodpeckers. In winter and summer one can find Sturz de vâsc. In winter there is a chance on Sfrâncioc mare, Sturzul viilor, Cocoșar and plenty of Cinteză de iarnă.

Nederlands: Tafelberg, hoogste punt van 't Gooi en omliggende heidevelden (Tafelbergheide en Blaricumerheide) met zijn beschermde leemkuilen en bossen vormen een uniek leefgebied in Nederland. Het wordt onderhouden met de hulp van schapen en hooglanders. Het gebied is verbonden met de omringende natuur via tunnels en ecoducten waardoor herten, vossen, dassen, marters en af en toe een wolf door het gebied kunnen trekken. Zoals de meeste heidehabitats zijn ze het meest interessant in de zomer. Je kunt de die in de heide broedt bijna niet missen. Maar ook Ciocârlie de pădure, Fâsă de luncă en Fâsă de pădure zijn er in overvloed. Tijdens zomeravonden kun je Șoimul rândunelelor vaak zien jagen over de heidevelden en midden in de zomer is er een goede kans om Viespar te zien. Het bos zit vol met spechten, zwarte, groene en alle 3 de bonte spechten. In de winter en zomer is Sturz de vâsc te vinden. In de winter is er kans op Sfrâncioc mare, Sturzul viilor, Cocoșar en volop Cinteză de iarnă.

Access
The Tafelbergheide is located west of the town of Blaricum. You can get their by bike or car. Near the Tafelberg is a parking with a restaurant, De Eendracht. Click on the P in the map for directions to a parking. The circular walk indicated on the map is approximately 4 km.

You can climb the Tafelberg easily and have a nice overview. The area can be busy during sunny weekends with local joggers, bikers, dogwalkers etc. Come early in the morning or in the evening, preferable during weekdays to avoid crowds.
