Description
The "Roerdal" area is a valley in which the river "Roer" flows towards the larger river "Maas" in the west. This specific part of the "Roer" is surrounded by pastures, agricultural fields with scattered trees and bushes and (mostly) deciduous forests. The river itself is a good place for species like Codobatură de munte, Pescăraș albastru and Fluierar de munte. If you're lucky, a beaver might show itself! Just next to the river, a steep sand wall is present in which a fair amount of Lăstun de mal breed. They can be seen foraging above the meadows in the area and flying in and out of their nesting holes.
The surrounding forests are home to a variety of songbirds, like Codroș de pădure, Muscar sur and sometimes Muscar negru. Woodpeckers also make use of the area and sometimes a Ciocănitoare de stejar can be heard and seen. Grangur can be heard from within the forests as well. Standing near the river gives a good overview of the meadow on the other side. Here, Uliu păsărar and Uliu porumbar can often be seen hunting.
Surrounding the agricultural fields and pastures, scattered trees, bushes and fences are present. These are always worth a check for species like Mărăcinar negru, Mărăcinar mare and, if you're lucky, Sfrâncioc roșiatic. Ciocârlie breeds in the area. The fields themselves are good for Potârniche and in winter large flocks of finches mixed with buntings, like Presură galbenă, can be seen.
The main reason this area is visited by birders, is the presence of a large group of Prigorie in late spring and summer since 2015. Somewhere in the area, not specifically this part of the river, Prigorie breed in steep sand walls and tend to hang out in the area just after fledging of the young. A large flock of sometimes 40 indiviuals can be seen, flying above the area in search for food. Often, the group tends to mix with large flocks of swallows and martins, like Rândunică and Lăstun de mal.

Nederlands: In het Roerdal stroomt de rivier de Roer richting de Maas in het westen. Dit specifieke deel van de Roer is omgeven door weilanden, akkers met verspreide bomen en struiken en (meestal) loofbossen. De rivier zelf is een goede plek voor soorten als Codobatură de munte, Pescăraș albastru en Fluierar de munte. Als je geluk hebt, kan een bever zich laten zien! Net naast de rivier is een steile zandwand aanwezig waarin redelijk wat Lăstun de mal broeden. Ze foerageren boven de weilanden in het gebied en vliegen in en uit hun nestholen.
De omliggende bossen herbergen een verscheidenheid aan zangvogels, zoals Codroș de pădure, Muscar sur en soms Muscar negru. Ook spechten maken gebruik van het gebied en soms is er een Ciocănitoare de stejar te horen en te zien. Grangur is ook vanuit de bossen te horen. Vanaf de oevers van de rivier heb je een goed overzicht van de weide aan de andere kant. Hier kun je Uliu păsărar en Uliu porumbar vaak zien jagen.
Rondom de akkers en weilanden zijn verspreide bomen, struiken en hekken aanwezig. Voor soorten als Mărăcinar negru, Mărăcinar mare en, als je geluk hebt, Sfrâncioc roșiatic zijn deze altijd de moeite waard. Ciocârlie broedt in het gebied. De velden zelf zijn goed voor Potârniche en in de winter zijn er grote zwermen vinken vermengd met gorzen, zoals Presură galbenă.
De belangrijkste reden waarom dit gebied door vogelaars wordt bezocht, is de aanwezigheid van een grote groep Prigorie in het late voorjaar en de zomer sinds 2015. Ergens in het gebied, niet specifiek dit deel van de rivier, broedt Prigorie in steile zandmuren en hebben de neiging om in het gebied rond te hangen net na het uitvliegen van de jongen. Een grote zwerm van soms 40 individuen is te zien, die boven het gebied vliegen op zoek naar voedsel. Vaak heeft de groep de neiging om zich te mengen met grote zwermen zwaluwen zoals Rândunică en Lăstun de mal.
