Water from the dunes runs towards the south point of Texel. Het Grote Vlak consists of a few lakes in this water course.
Het Grote Vlak often holds a lot of ducks ( Rață lingurar , Rață pestriță , Rață sulițar , Călifar alb , Rață fluierătoare and in spring Rață cârâitoare ), gulls and grebes. Sometimes waders, like Sitar de mal , are abundant and few songbirds, like Fâsă de munte and Mărăcinar negru (sometimes even Gușă vânătă ), can be found. The area is also good for finding Porumbel de scorbură , Pietrar sur and in winter Șorecar încălțat .
Het Grote Vlak is easily accessible from the village of Den Hoorn towards the beach. You can park on the roadside, but try to give way to cyclists on the parallel cycle path.
Carefully look at songbirds, it is one of the few places with good chances for Fâsă de munte .
Texel is one of the best bird watching destinations in the Netherlands. Bird watchers from all over Europe come to this Wadden Sea island to watch birds. Rare birds and vagrants are often seen on Texel and interesting birds can be observed all year round. Klaas de Jong - one of the most reputed bird guides in the Netherlands - lives on Texel and knows the island as no other. Klaas offers full day or half day birding tours. One of the great services Klaas provides, is the pick-up-service. His minibus can pick you up at your hotel or at the ferry port. A very convenient service if you only have a day to explore the island. Directly from the ferry you you can start off and from there Klaas takes you to the best birding areas of the island.
