The Elster Buitenwaarden is a varied river nature reserve. In winter there are many Gârliță mare and Gâscă călugăriță, and on the water Ferestraș mare and Rață sunătoare. In spring Ciocîntors, Călifar alb and Prundăraș gulerat mic breed on the mudflats. During spring migration, the area is rich in wading birds such as Fluierar de mlaștină, Fluierar cu picioare verzi, Fluierar negru, and also sandpipers such as Fugaci pitic, Fugaci mic and Fugaci roșcat are possible. Lăcar de mlaștină, Lăcar de stuf, Silvie de câmp and Privighetoare roșcată are common songbirds. Thanks to the great variety of habitats and tranquility, this is a top area for birds and birders.

Access
The Elster Buitenwaarden is located along the river Nederrijn near the town of Elst. Parking is available at Plantage Willem III, at Rijksstraatweg 265, Elst. Press P on the map for directions. From there, a marked walking route of approximately 6 km starts through the area, along marshes, mudflats and stream channels. Count on 1.5 to 2 hours for a visit.

Nederlands: De Elster Buitenwaarden ligt langs de Nederrijn bij Elst. Parkeren kan bij Plantage Willem III, aan de Rijksstraatweg 265, Elst. Vanaf daar start een gemarkeerde wandelroute van ongeveer 6 km door het gebied, langs moeras, slikranden en geulen. Reken op 1,5 tot 2 uur voor een bezoek.
