Description
The area around Malta International Airport is at its best in spring, particularly with north-west winds. On good days there can be good numbers of harriers, mostly Erete de stuf but also Erete alb (early-mid spring) and Erete sur (mid-late spring). The site can also be good for Vânturel mic and Vânturel de seară (late spring). In practice any migrating species can be seen from the area since it is open, such as flocks of herons, waders, Prigorie and Dumbrăveancă. Ciocârlie de stol arrive in spring and remain to breed in small numbers. Other passerines include hirundines, including Rândunică roșcată, and pipits, including Fâsă roșiatică. In late autumn, the site is also one of the best places in Malta to see Ploier auriu and Nagâț. Several rarities have been seen here over the years.
