Lake Almyros is one of the most important wetlands of western Crete. In the lake you can find many aquatic birds. The lake is not only worth a visit for waterfowl. In Georgioupoulis I found the largest Rândunică roost I have seen so far! Among the other birds you can encounter are Fluierar cu picioare verzi, Fluierar de mlaștină, Becațină comună, Fluierar de munte, Fluierar de zăvoi, Pescăraș albastru, Drepnea mare, Egretă mică, Pescăruș cu picioare galbene, Sticlete, Vrabie italiană and Stufărică.

You can reach the lake from the town when following the road "Palea EO Chanion Rethimnou". The Rândunică roost is at the opposite position of the town.
