Description

The Ilmenau Ponds (Ilmenauer Teiche) are an ecologically rich wetland area of 6 ponds and one of the largest natural wetland habitats in the region. Originally created in the 14th century for fish farming. Today, the area is protected as a nature reserve. The pond area is also used for recreation. There is a zoo as well as a park-like section of the shore of the biggest pond (Großer Teich). On the foundation of the former diving tower, a bird hide was built in the pond. There is also a boat rental at the Großer Teich.

The pond complex is important as a breeding area for many waterfowl, but the ponds also serve as a resting place for migratory birds. Birds you can observe include Rață cu cap castaniu, Rață moțată, Cârstel de baltă, Lăcar de mlaștină, Lăcar mare, Pescăraș albastru, Corcodel mic, Corb, Gaie roșie, Silvie cu cap negru, Silvie de zăvoi, Cocoșar and Cuc. In winter Rață sunătoare and Ferestraș mare can show up.
