Description
Gedenkstätte Stresow is a little memorial of World War II located in the Wendland in midst of a lot of nature. Right next to the memorial is a small lake, where you can often see Ferestraș mic, Ferestraș mare and several species of duck in Winter.
A few hundred meters futher there is an observation tower with a nice view over the partially flooded meadows and small bodies of water. In winter they are getting used as a wintering and migration place for thousands of ducks and geese such as Rață sulițar, Rață sunătoare, Rață fluierătoare, Rață pestriță, Rață mică, Rață cârâitoare, Rață lingurar, Rață cu cap castaniu, Rață moțată, Călifar alb, Gâscă călugăriță, Gârliță mare, Gâscă de semănătură and Lebădă de iarnă. If you are lucky than you can spot a Sfrâncioc mare in the bushes.
During migration times many waders visit the area. You can observe Nagâț, Fugaci de țărm, Prundăraș gulerat mare, Prundăraș gulerat mic, Culic mare, Sitar de mal, Fluierar de munte, Becațină comună, Fluierar de mlaștină, Fluierar de zăvoi, Fluierar negru, Fluierar cu picioare roșii, Fluierar cu picioare verzi and sometimes Bătăuș. On the water bodies you can sometimes spot grebes such as Corcodel cu gât roșu or Corcodel mic or see a Pescăraș albastru.
For a better look there is a route on the dike through the meadows so you can see the whole area from different sides. In the summer there are many swallows and Cocor , herons and Barză albă. Stârc cenușiu and Egretă mare are not uncommon, with a bit of luck you even can see a pair of Barză neagră.
From the power poles, the bushes and out of the reed you can hear the songs of Presură de stuf, Presură sură, Presură galbenă, Silvie de câmp, Lăcar mic, Lăcar de stuf, Lăcar mare, Mărăcinar mare, Mărăcinar negru, Ciocârlie and see for example Sfrâncioc roșiatic or Codobatură galbenă.
Over the whole year you can spot many different birds of prey. From the observation tower you can see Erete de stuf flying over the reed beds, in the whole area Șorecar comun, Gaie roșie and Vânturel roșu are not uncommon. On very good days you can even see a Șoim călător or Viespar. Also often seen are Gaie neagră, Erete vânăt and Uligan pescar and sometimes more down by the river Aland in the trees sit one or two Codalb.

Access
Feuchtwiesen Gedenkstätte Stresow is located east of the villages of Kapern and Gummern and north of the village of Aulosen. There are two roads to the memorial Stresow. One is a dirt road from Kapern, safer is the normal road from Aulosen. On the memorial is a parking space, where you can park your car. Press P on the map for directions to the parking. From there it is better to walk or to ride a bike. You can also easily connect the visit with a bike tour through the beautiful landscape of Wendland.
