Description
The Eschefelder Teiche are a nature reserve located 30 km south of Leipzig. The area consists of 8 ponds and covers an area of 270 hectares. The ponds were artificially created in the 18th century for fishing. The largest pond is the pond near Eschefeld. The ponds are an important feeding, breeding and resting area for numerous waterfowl species. The surrounding area is mainly used for agriculture. On the edge of the large pond there is the Naturschutzstation (nature conservation station) Teichhaus. It is run by NABU (BirdLife Germany) and also has a restaurant. On the banks of the large pond on the artificially created dam you can find a bird hide.
The area has a Pescăruș râzător colony on the largest of the 8 lakes. In the noisy colony Corcodel cu gât negru and Pescăruș cu cap negru also find shelter. The most important breeding birds include Buhai de baltă and Stârc pitic, Erete de stuf, Lăcar mare, Boicuș, Pițigoi de stuf, Privighetoare roșcată and Gușă vânătă. All these species are best observed between April and early June. Depending on the season ducks like Rață cârâitoare, Rață cu ciuf, Rață sunătoare, Ferestraș mare, Rață lingurar, Călifar alb and Rață sulițar can be seen.
During migration periods, other species arrive. Uligan pescar and Codalb are regular guests who prey on food in the waters. There are also Chirighiță neagră as well as Pescăruș mic. Another interesting group during migration is resting waders. These include Nagâț, Prundăraș gulerat mic, Prundăraș gulerat mare, Becațină comună, Fluierar cu picioare verzi, Fluierar de munte, Fluierar de mlaștină, Fluierar cu picioare roșii and Bătăuș. Sometimes rare birds like Fugaci pătat, Fluierar de lac and Notatiță are observed.

Access
The ponds are located between the villages of Frohburg and Eschefeld, about 30 km south of Leipzig. From Frohburg train station, take bus line 254 in the direction of Altenburg. Or on foot in 25 minutes from Frohburg in the direction of Eschefeld. You can also park at the Naturschutzstation Teichhaus Eschefeld (Teichhaus 1, 04654 Frohburg). Click on the P in the map for directions. The circular walk indicated on the map is about 6 km.
