Description
The Seudre estuary is home to a large portion of the population of the nanmetum subspecies of the Gușă vânătă, which is endemic to the French Atlantic coast. With a bit of luck it can be observed here (other good spots are the Pointe de la Coubre, Marais de Brouage and RNMO). Some breeding birds of the Moulin des Loges reserve are Codobatură galbenă, Stufărică, Rândunică, Piciorong and more.
Nearby Lopătar and different heron species, such as Stârc de noapte are breeding, as well as Chiră de baltă and Gaie cenușie. Besides from that you can observe Rață cârâitoare and several limicole species during migration, such as Bătăuș, Sitar de mal (keep your eyes open for the islandica subspecies), Fugaci mic etc. (see the list below). The open landscape also allows good observations of migrating passerines, like Mărăcinar mare, Muscar negru, Codroș de pădure or Pietrar sur, as well as Capîntortură. On the nearby fields you can observe Potârniche cu picioare roșii, Ploier auriu (only during winter), Nagâț and Presură sură. Note that in end of August the hunt for waders and ducks begins, which makes good observations harder.
In the summer 2025 a Fugaci pătat and a Fluierar de lac were stationary on the side of the road for a while. I was also able to observe a Egretă mică x Egretă de recif hybrid several times in the area.
