One of the largest forests in Europe.
The Forêt de Fontainebleau is a huge wooded area of 25,000 hectares. On the east side, the forest of Fontainebleau borders the Seine. The landscape is varied with pine forest, oak forest, wetlands, rocks and heathlands. Numerous hiking trails have been set out in this wooded area. Characteristic elements in the Forest of Fontainebleau are the formations of sandstone rocks that you find scattered throughout the area. This beautiful and large forest holds of course many forest birds. The forest is home to over 200 species of birds including 102 nesting ones. Among the birds that can be seen are Ciocănitoare de stejar, Ciocănitoare neagră, Țiclean, Pițigoi moțat, Pitulice sfârâitoare, Pitulice de munte, Ciocârlie de pădure, Aușel sprâncenat, Aușel cu cap galben, Codroș de pădure, Fâsă de pădure, Botgros and Mugurar.

Easy to reach by car. There is a parking lot at the visitor center. Click on the P in the map for directions. There are numerous walking routes through the forest. More than 1,500 kilometers of pathways, 400 of them marked. The route shown on the map is approximately 5,5 km.
