Description
Luitemaa Nature Reserve is a wetland complex on the south-western coast of Estonia that consists of diverse coastal and inland habitats including shallow sea, capes and islands, coastal meadows and reed-beds. The coastal meadows near Võiste have shallow waters that attract large amounts of dabbling ducks (Rață pestriță, Rață mare, Rață cârâitoare, Rață fluierătoare, Rață mică and so on), Călifar alb and swans. The wide coastal meadows and lagoons are favored by geese. Most common are Gâscă de vară and Gâscă călugăriță. Rarer gooses like Gârliță mare, Gâscă cu cioc scurt, Gâscă canadiană, Gâscă cu gât roșu, Gâscă neagră, Tundra Bean Goose and Gâscă de semănătură are often found during migration.
The sandbanks and lagoons are great spots for wading birds. Most common breeding birds are Fluierar cu picioare roșii, Prundăraș gulerat mare, Scoicar, Ploier auriu, Nagâț, and Bătăuș. During migration Fluierar negru, Ciocîntors, Fugaci de țărm, Fugaci mic, Fugaci pitic, Fugaci mare, Fugaci roșcat, Culic mare and Culic mic have been recorded.
