Description
Borreby Mose is a large area with bog and reedbeds. Around the bog are extensive meadows used for grazing. Despite attempts to drain and cultivate, today the site is protected under Natura 2000 and serves as a vital refuge for birds. The reedbeds host breeding Buhai de baltă, Erete de stuf, Pițigoi de stuf, Lăcar mic, Lăcar de stuf and occasionally rarities like Grelușel de stuf and Lăcar mare. The wet meadows, shallow pools and muddy edges attract many waders and meadow-birds like Sitar de mal, Bătăuș, Nagâț, Fluierar cu picioare roșii, Scoicar, Prundăraș gulerat mare, and Ciocîntors.
During migration thousands of geese roost in the area, joined by ducks like Rață sulițar, Rață lingurar, Rață mică and Rață moțată. Winter brings Ferestraș mic, Rață sunătoare, and Erete vânăt. A regular resident is Codalb. Less common birds that visit Borreby Mose include Pescăriță mare and Notatiță. Every year rarities turn up in the area, especially during migration. For example Fugaci pătat and Barză neagră have been observed.
