Description
The Wonderwoud nature reserve consists of a couple of specific areas. When you enter, you first arrive at the old fishing pond. This became the picnic area and water playground. It's not allowed to fish anymore in the pond, making it more interesting for wildlife. Around the pond, there is a small forest area.
Behind the small forest area, you'll arrive at the old sand quarry, which left a big body of water that attracts quite some water birds and some field birds like the Nagâț. Next to that, there are some sandy hills left over from the quarry works which now became a hotspot for Lăstun de mal. Behind the corner, there is still a lookout tower and some more forest areas.
The nature reserve is supposed to still grow quite a bit with areas around the whole water body, but it will still take a couple of years to get there.

Nederlands: Wonderwoud is een nieuw natuurgebied vlak bij de stad Gent en was ooit een zandwinplas. Daardoor is er een mooie combinatie van waterpartijen en zandheuvels ontstaan, waardoor er veel verschillende leefgebieden zijn ontstaan. Bij binnenkomst kom je eerst bij de oude visvijver. Er is nu een picknickplaats en waterspeelplaats. Vissen in de vijver is niet meer toegestaan, waardoor deze interessanter is geworden voor vogels en andere dieren. Rondom de vijver ligt een klein bos.
Achter het kleine bos kom je bij de oude zandwinplas. Een groot meer dat veel watervogels en ook akkervogels aantrekt, zoals de Nagâț. Er liggen nog enkele zandheuvels die nu een hotspot zijn geworden voor de Lăstun de mal. Er staat ook nog een uitkijktoren van 18 meter hoog en er zijn nog wat stukken bos.
Het natuurgebied zal naar verwachting nog flink groeien met gebieden rond de waterplas, maar het zal nog een paar jaar duren voordat het zover is.

Access
Wonderwoud is located northeast of the city of Ghent, about 7 km from the city center. The area is best accessed by car or by bike. There are three entrances: on Drieselstraat, Langenaarsstraat and Veldstraat. Each entrance has a bicycle parking, on the Visdiefpad there is a small parking for cars next to the Drieselstraat entrance. Press P on the map for directions to the parking.
The reserve is not very big yet, so you can go around the around the whole area in about an hour if you don't take into account time to look at birds.

Nederlands: Wonderwoud ligt ten noordoosten van Gent, op ongeveer 7 km van het stadscentrum. Het gebied is het best bereikbaar met de auto of de fiets. Er zijn drie ingangen: aan de Drieselstraat, Langenaarsstraat en Veldstraat. Elke ingang heeft een fietsenstalling, aan het Visdiefpad is er een kleine parkeerplaats voor auto's bij de ingang aan de Drieselstraat. Druk op P op de kaart voor een routebeschrijving naar de parkeerplaats.
Het natuurgebied is nog niet erg groot, dus je kunt het hele gebied in ongeveer een uur rondlopen, als je de tijd om vogels te kijken niet meetelt.
