The big pond and meadows near the abbey of Herkenrode are an attractive place for birdwatching.
Around the abbey of Herkenrode, the surrounding agricultural land has been converted into ecologically valuable areas and nature has been restored. Wet and dry grasslands, marsh zones, orchards, hedgerows, coppice groves and pools now define the landscape. The meadows and the large pond lined with reeds attract many birds. Among the birds you can see here are Călifar alb, Rață cârâitoare, Rață lingurar, Corcodel mic, Corcodel mare, Corcodel cu gât negru, Pescăraș albastru, Șoim călător and Egretă mare.
