A natural harbour with an active volcano. The site has a variety of interesting fauna including Chinstrap Penguin.
One can observe Chinstrap Penguin, a range of other bird life and seals including: Leopard, Weddell and Elephant seals. The site was historically a sealing and whaling station, with derelict and decaying constructions present. Deception Island is still home to some scientific research stations. Tourism has been having an increasing effect since 1966.
Deception island is accessible by boat. Take note of recent (Winter 2022) guidelines on distancing from wildlife - IAATO Guidlines state: "If visitors are approached by wildlife, visitors must take appropriate action to ensure the advised minimum distance of five metres is maintained where it can be safely done".
