Descrição

Lochwinnoch wetland is a mixture of broadleaved woodland, open water and marshy areas with some floating fen. In Spring Mergulhão-de-crista perform their courtship rituals. Felosa-dos-juncos and Felosa-malhada can be heard singing from the wetter areas of the reserve. Also Felosa-musical, Felosa-comum, Felosa-das-figueiras, Toutinegra-de-barrette-preto, papa-amoras-cinzento and Papa-amoras-comum in the woods. Frango-d'água can be heard squealing from the reedbed areas.

In Autumn you can see large gatherings of Andorinha-das-chaminés, often roosting in the wetland vegetation, preparing for their long southward journeys. Flocks of Tordo-ruivo-comum and Tordo-zornal arrive to strip the trees of their wild fruits. Look up and you might catch sight of mixed flocks of tits, Estrelinha-de-poupa and Trepadeira-do-bosque in the woodland.

In Winter a wide variety of ducks arrive along with variable numbers of Cisne-bravo. At this time of year there are frequent sightings of Tartaranhão-azulado and other birds of prey. Guarda-rios-comum are present, often affording excellent views.

Abibe-comum and Narceja-comum are seen regularly on the scrape built behind the visitor centre, which can be viewed from inside, including from the viewing tower upstairs. The scrape also attracts Maçarico-de-bico-direito and other waders, such as Perna-vermelha-comum, Pilrito-comum, Maçarico-real, Borrelho-grande-de-coleira, Maçarico-galego and sandpipers. Guincho-comum breed on the floating platforms on Aird Meadow. On the south side of the area Barr Loch also attracts good numbers of Mergulhão-de-crista, ducks and swans.
