Descrição

Carnsew Pool should be included as part of your visit to the Hayle Estuary. It is a tidal pool that attracts Wildfowl, Divers and Waders depending on the tide (see link to the tides table below).

In winter, especially after storms, the pool can hold Divers. All six species of diver have been seen here. The most common is Mobêlha-grande, then Mobêlha-pequena, Mobêlha-árctica and the rarer Mobelha-do-pacífico and Mobêlha-de-bico-branco on a couple of occasions. Mergulhão-pequeno are also here with sometimes up to ten birds present. You will also find both Corvo-marinho-de-faces-brancas and Corvo-marinho-de-crista using the pool. Piadeira and Marrequinha-comum often stray from the main estuary onto Carnsew and sea ducks like Eider-edredão, Pato-de-cauda-afilada and Pato-preto can occasionally be found. Merganso-grande and Merganso-de-poupa are both winter visitors here. Gaivota-de-cabeça-preta often congregate on the exposed mud at low tide and the pool can be good for Garajau-comum, Andorinha-do-mar-comum and Andorinha-do-mar-árctica during migration. Occasionally a Andorinha-do-mar-anã or Gaivina-preta will pass through.

In early Autumn Waders can be found around the edges of the pool. The tide pushes waders up into the western end and close views can often be obtained if they are not disturbed. The pool has always been famous for attracting American waders and Pilrito-semipalmado, Pilrito-peitoral, Pilrito-anão and Macarico de rabadilha branca have all been seen here. Other waders seen regularly are Maçarico-real, Maçarico-galego, Pilrito-comum, Perna-verde-comum, Borrelho-grande-de-coleira, Pilrito-de-bico-comprido, Maçarico-das-rochas, Tarambola-cinzenta and Ostraceiro.

Garça-real and Garça-branca-pequena can be seen around the shoreline and Guarda-rios-comum is a regular sight here from late Autumn through the winter. The surrounding trees and bushes hold smaller birds like Verdilhão-comum, Pintarroxo-comum, Pintassilgo and occasionally Estrelinha-de-poupa. The path towards the beach sometimes has Chasco-cinzento on migration.
