Stornäset is one of the most valuable bird resting and breeding grounds in Sweden. The mix of deciduous forest, meadows and pastures is a magnet for birds.
Stornäsets Nature Reserve offers great opportunities to see birds. Both in spring and autumn, lots of birds are can be seen here. The 149 hectare big reserve has a large contiguous deciduous forest area that is surrounded by meadows and pastures. The county's largest claimed seafront meadow and its connecting species-rich shallow seabeds attract thousands of birds, especially during migration. Several hides are built to allow you to watch birds without disturbing them.
Stornäset is a very important resting place for migratory birds. The shallow beaches, sand reefs and open meadows provide rest and food to the long-distance migratory birds. Here, waders and ducks thrive, but many passerines and birds of prey also pass by Stornäset. Most birds stop only for a short time, before moving on on their way to or from northern Sweden, Finland or Russia.
Among the water birds that like to stay here are, for example Arrabio, Pato-trombeteiro, Mergulhão-de-crista, and Cisne-bravo. Examples from the many waders are Ostraceiro, Tarambola-cinzenta, Tarambola-dourada, Combatente, Rola-do-mar, Perna-vermelha-comum, Pilrito-comum, Pilrito de Temminck and Perna-vermelha-escuro.
Escrevedeira-das-neves, Pintarroxo-carmíneo, Pisco-de-peito-azul and alvéola-amarela are examples of passerines that you can see and birds of prey such as Búteo-calçado and Tartaranhão-azulado. Rare guests include Pilrito-de-bico-comprido, Falaropo-de-bico-fino, Falaropo-de-bico-grosso and Narceja-real.
From the E4 you go towards Alnö, go over Alnöbron, drive straight ahead at the roundabout and then follow the road signs towards Stornäset. Click on the P in the map to get directions to the parking. From the parking you can explore the area on foot. A wide track leads out onto the headland. The route that is shown on the map is about 3 km.
Note: In the reserve there is a bird protection area that you are not allowed to enter during the period 1 April - 10 October. The reason for this is to protect bird life., so please respect this.
