Descrição

Because the island is an important autumn migration stopover the bird observatory "Stora Fjäderägg" was created and is active both during the spring and autumn season on the island. By joining the ringing/banding you will get the best oppurtunity to see most birds and up close as well. If you want to join the ringing you can go to the link down below. If you don't want to join the ringing there is also a small youth hostel on the island where you can stay with the link also down below.

The island itself is small with a central asphalted road going from the harbour to the housing area. You can also go offroad but have to be careful where you walk as some areas are rocky or wet. Bringing boots is recommended.

On the island there is a good possibility to find north scandinavian birds. During early September Escrevedeira-rústica, Escrevedeira da Lapónia, Pisco-de-peito-azul and Petinha-de-garganta-ruiva pass the island. In late September Pica-pau-tridáctilo, Cruza-bico-comum and Cruza-bico-papagaio arrive on the island. All through October Tagarela-europeu and Chapim-rabilongo are often flying around. Throughout the autumn season Mocho de Tengmalm is fairly common with rarer but annual observations of Coruja-gavião and Mocho-pigmeu. Rarities that are seen most years are Felosa-bilistada, Estrelinha de Pallas, Escrevedeira-pigmeia and Pisco-de-flanco-ruivo. There is also a small group of Galo-lira living on the island.

As the island is located in the middle of the northern Baltic there is also a good possibility to find sea birds, but for this you need to bring a scope. Species seen are Águia-rabalva, Moleiro-parasítico, Pato-fusco, Pato-de-cauda-afilada and Arau-d'asa-branca. In case you are also a mammal enthusiast there are Ringed seals basking on the shorelines.

Acesso

The only way to travel to Stora Fjäderägg is by boat. From Umeå you can take either your own car or buss 171 to Norrfjärden. Here you park your car and continue on foot to the ferry. The ferry is free of charge and depending on the weather takes around 45 minutes to get to Holmön. From here you have to take a smaller boat to Stora Fjäderägg which can be booked through either the hostel or the bird observatory (see their links down below).
