Stegeborg lies in the middle of the long bay of Slätbaken. In and around Stegeborg ca 180 bird species have been recorded. The strait at Stegeborg is ice-free almost all winters, if the temperture is not too cold the deeper parts around Stegeborg are also open. Large amounts of Zarro-negrinha, Pato-olho-d'ouro, Merganso-grande, Pato-real and Galeirão-comum winter in the aera. Numbering in the hundreds sometimes in the thousands. Along with these smaller amounts of less common wintering birds like Merganso-pequeno, Zarro-bastardo, Frisada, Marrequinha-comum, Mergulhão-de-crista, Zarro-comum, Corvo-marinho-de-faces-brancas, Garça-real, Cisne-bravo, Ganso-comum and Ganso do Canadá. The area is home to wintering gulls. Many Águia-rabalva also winter here. As do passerine birds like Picanço-grande, Tordeia, Tordo-zornal, and Pisco-de-peito-ruivo.
During spring migration many dabbling ducks (Marrequinha-comum, Piadeira, Frisada, and Arrabio), swans and geese can be found. Most common among geese are Ganso-comum and Ganso do Canadá. Often in the hundreds. Often a few Ganso-grande-de-testa-branca, Ganso-campestre, and Tundra Bean Goose. Hundreds of Cisne-bravo use the fields during migraton. Hundreds of Zarro-negrinha and Pato-olho-d'ouro can also be found. Eider-edredão can also be observed during migration. Quite a few birds of prey can be seen. Some of the more common are Tartaranhão-ruivo-dos-pauis, Águia-d'asa-redonda, Águia-pesqueira and Açor. Sometimes Rabirruivo-preto can be found. Mergulhão-de-pescoço-castanho and Mobêlha-árctica often stay on the waters.
Picanço-de-dorso-ruivo, Pintarroxo-carmíneo, Cotovia-pequena, Papa-moscas-cinzento, Papa-moscas-preto and Laverca all breed on the fields and forests. In the reedbeds Felosa-dos-juncos, Escrevedeira-dos-caniços, and rouxinol-dos-caniços breed. While Rouxinol-grande-dos-caniços and Felosa-palustre are sometimes heard. Ganso-de-faces-brancas, Corvo-marinho-de-faces-brancas, Mergulhão-de-crista and Frisada breed. gaivota-da-asa-escura and Bútio-vespeiro can sometimes be seen. During autumn large flocks of diving ducks, and some passerine birds can often be found.
