Descrição
Lake Sommen is quite deep and most of the lake is ice-free all-winter. During this period large amounts of Merganso-grande, Pato-olho-d'ouro and Mergulhão-de-crista winter in Sommen. Sometimes in the hundreds. Among these Zarro-negrinha, Cisne-vulgar, Cisne-bravo, Galeirão-comum, and Gaivota-parda can often be found. The lake is also home to quite a few rarer wintering birds like Mobêlha-árctica, Merganso-de-poupa, Águia-real, Pato-preto, Pato-fusco, Guarda-rios-comum, Mobêlha-pequena and Guincho-comum.
During the spring migration marine ducks can be found in the lake. At the same time Mobêlha-pequena, and Mobêlha-árctica, arrive at the lake. Mobêlha-árctica breeds in the lake while Mobêlha-pequena feeds in the lake and breeds in small neighbouring lakes. The rare Mobêlha-de-bico-branco has been seen. Sommen archipelago hosts large colonies of Andorinha-do-mar-comum, Gaivota-parda, Guincho-comum, Gaivota-argêntea, Garça-real and Corvo-marinho-de-faces-brancas. Among these some rare birds like gaivota-da-asa-escura, and Andorinha-do-mar-árctica can be seen.
The large decidous forests around sommen especially on Torpön host plenty of quite rare birds like: Papa-moscas-pequeno, Pica-pau-malhado-pequeno, Quebra-nozes, and Bufo-pequeno. Around Sommen there is also old conifer forests around which support large populations of woodpeckers. Torcicolo, Pica-pau-verde, Pica-pau-preto, Pica-pau-malhado-pequeno, Pica-pau-tridáctilo (very rare), Pica-pau-malhado-grande and Pica-pau-de-dorso-branco (extinct in the area) have all been recorded. Other otherwise rare forrest birds found here are: Galinha-do-mato Tetraz, Galo-lira (Rocks mosse), and Quebra-nozes.
During the autumn birds can be seen migrating through the lake. Most common are the doves, finches, terns, and waders. At Rocks mosse Galo-lira and Tetraz breed. At Visskvarn there are rapids where Melro-d'água, and Alvéola-cinzenta can be seen.
