At Sandarviken 223 bird species have been recorded. 35 species of wading birds have been recorded.
Sandarviken holds thousands of wintering Zarro-bastardo but Pato-fusco, Pato-preto, Eider-edredão and diving ducks also winter in smaller numbers. Other waterfowl like Piadeira, Pato-trombeteiro Marrequinha-comum, Pato-branco and Frisada also winter in the area. Sandarviken holds wintering Mergulhão-de-crista, Mergulhão-de-pescoço-ruivo, and Mergulhão-de-pescoço-castanho.Ganso-de-faces-brancas also winter as do a few wading birds in winter. Narceja-galega is sometimes found. Wintering birds of prey are often found in the area. Some of the common ones are Tartaranhão-azulado, Águia-d'asa-redonda, Águia-rabalva, and Águia-real.
During migration period the bay often holds large amounts of waders. Most numerous is the Pilrito-comum which sometimes number in the thousands. Maçarico-de-bico-direito, Narceja-comum, Ostraceiro, Maçarico-real, Perna-vermelha-comum, Pilrito-comum, Alfaiate, and Borrelho-grande-de-coleira all breed somewhat regularly. Other wading birds often found are:Rola-do-mar, Tarambola-cinzenta, Fuselo, Pilrito-sanderlingo, Pilrito de Temminck, and Pilrito-pequeno. Rarer wading birds like Pilrito-falcinelo, Falaropo-de-bico-fino, Narceja-galega and Narceja-real are sometimes found. Many vagrant wading birds have also been found.
In the lagoon Frisada, Pato-trombeteiro, Marreco and many other dabbling ducks often Feed. Mobêlha-pequena and Mobêlha-árctica often rest at Sandarviken year round. Large amounts of geese use the coastal meadows as resting and feeding ground during their migration. Ganso-de-faces-brancas and Ganso-comum can sometimes be found in the thousands. Ganso-de-bico-curto and Ganso-de-pescoço-ruivo has been seen.
