The deep waters around Lake Vättern are ice-free most years. This makes it an excellent wintering area for birds. The lake holds large wintering populations of gulls like Gaivota-parda, Gaivota-argêntea and Alcatraz-comum. This is also one of the best places for the rare Gaivota-hiperbórea, although it is not seen most years. Most gulls winter around Motala. The area also holds wintering waterfowl. Most commonly: Merganso-grande, Cisne-vulgar, Garça-real, Cisne-bravo, Zarro-negrinha and Pato-olho-d'ouro. Around Vadstenaviken large amounts (many hundreds) of Pato-real winter. Often with other rarer (wintering) dabbling ducks in the mix. The lake also holds wintering populations of Corvo-marinho-de-faces-brancas, Merganso-de-poupa, Merganso-pequeno (visitors from Boren) Mergulhão-de-crista, Mergulhão-pequeno, and during mild winters: Mergulhão-de-pescoço-castanho, Pato-fusco, Mobêlha-árctica and Pato-de-cauda-afilada. The large fields around Vadstena and Norrsten hold wintering geese, Pintarroxo-de-bico-amarelo and Escrevedeira-das-neves. Many birds of prey also winter. Most common are Gavião da Europa, and Águia-rabalva.
During the last weeks of Febuari the first spring birds arrive. Estorninho-malhado, Laverca, Tentilhão-comum, and Abibe-comum are usually the first to arrive. Some of the previously mentioned birds might start to winter if the winters continue to be mild. Many geese like Ganso-de-faces-brancas, Ganso-comum, Ganso-campestre, Ganso-grande-de-testa-branca Tundra Bean Goose and Ganso do Canadá are often seen. Most geese congregate around Tycklingen and Norrsten. Sometimes Ganso-de-bico-curto is also found.
During March most of the geese increase in number. More birds of prey arrive: Búteo-calçado, peneireiro-de-dorso-malhado / peneireiro, falcão-peregrino, and Milhafre-real. In Vadstenaviken large amounts of dabbling ducks often rest. Pato-branco (Regular), Guincho-comum, Ostraceiro, and Narceja-comum also arrive during this period. From this period onwards Garça-branca-grande is sometimes seen.
During April other wader along with Pintarroxo-comum and Petinha-dos-prados arrive. During April-May large amounts of passerine birds, wader, gulls, and terns use the lake as a landmark for migration. It starts in the middle of April with thousands of Tentilhão-comum and Tentilhão-montês, continuing with thousands of Maçarico-real, with smaller amounts of other waders like Maçarico-galego, Fuselo, Combatente and Perna-vermelha-comum. Also large amounts of gulls like Guincho-comum and Gaivota-parda. In early May hundreds of terns (Andorinha-do-mar-comum, Andorinha-do-mar-árctica) pass. Along with rarer birds like Gaivina-preta, Gaivota-tridáctila (quite rare) and Gaivota-pequena.
During the summer many species of night-active birds can be heard like Felosa-malhada, Rouxinol-russo, Codornizão, Rouxinol-grande-dos-caniços (vadstena reningsverk), Codorniz and sometimes Felosa-fluvial. Many other warblers can be found during this period. In the cities of Motala and Vadstena city birds like Rola-turca, Verdilhão-comum, Rabirruivo-preto (missing most winters), Tentilhão-montês, Pombo-doméstico, and Toutinegra-de-barrette-preto can be found year round.
