Ljusfors lies in the northern part of Östgötaslätten, a large Swedish plain. It is surrounded by large amounts of forest. The coastal meadows are often visited by flocks of Zarro-negrinha, Gaivota-parda, Gaivota-argêntea, Alcatraz-comum, Guincho-comum, Pato-olho-d'ouro, Pato-real, Cisne-vulgar, Cisne-bravo, Galeirão-comum, Merganso-grande (some times up to 500) Garça-real and Corvo-marinho-de-faces-brancas in the open not frozen parts of the lake. Smaller amounts of rarer wintering waterfowl like Mergulhão-pequeno, Merganso-de-poupa, Merganso-pequeno, Mergulhão-de-crista, and Guarda-rios-comum.
In the oak meadows tits, woodpeckers, finches winter along with common winter birds like Dom-fafe, Tagarela-europeu, Pintarroxo-de-queixo-preto, and Tentilhão-montês. On the fields geese and swans can be found. Ganso-comum, Ganso do Canadá, and Ganso-campestre have all been sighted.
During spring and autumn the coastal meadows are filled with large amounts of gulls, waders, passerine birds and terns. Maçarico-bastardo, Perna-vermelha-comum, Maçarico-das-rochas, Abibe-comum, Combatente, Narceja-comum, Borrelho-pequeno-de-coleira, and Maçarico-real are all observed although there are often not many wadingbirds.
During spring rains hundreds of Andorinha-do-mar-comum and Guincho-comum could be forced on the lake. Along with smaller amounts of Gaivota-argêntea, Gaivota-parda, Alcatraz-comum and Andorinha-do-mar-árctica.
In the spring and summer large amounts of passerine birds can be heard in the forests. Although mostly common birds can be found, also rarer birds like Papa-moscas-pequeno, Pica-pau-malhado-pequeno and Bico-grossudo can be observed.
On the islands Rouxinol-grande-dos-caniços, Guincho-comum (large colony), Zarro-negrinha, Frisada, Ganso-de-faces-brancas, Ganso-comum, Perna-vermelha-comum and Corvo-marinho-de-faces-brancas likely breed. Common passerines on the coastal meadows are Pintarroxo-de-bico-amarelo (rare and only during the migration), Pintarroxo-comum, alvéola-amarela, Pintassilgo, Petinha-dos-prados and Laverca.
Many species of dabbling ducks can also be found during this season like Marrequinha-comum, Piadeira, Frisada, Pato-trombeteiro, and Marreco. Along the river Alvéola-cinzenta and Guarda-rios-comum breed, and Melro-d'água can be found.

There are 2 parking spots and 2 nature reserves at the river mouth, one at each side of the river. There is a parking spot and trail at both reserves. At ljusfors naturreservat the trail goes up on a large hill which is perfect for viewing the area. Click on a P in the map for directions.
