Bergafjärden consists of a large coastal meadow in the middle and higher hill/mountainous areas to the north and south. Most of the coastal meadow has been turned into a large beach for tourists but there are parts untouched in the northern part of the bay. Over the years 207 species have been recorded. During winter ice-free periods are often birdrich although the shallow waters often makes it frozen during winters. Cisne-vulgar, Cisne-bravo, Merganso-pequeno, Pato-real, Merganso-grande, Pato-olho-d'ouro, Gaivota-argêntea, Gaivota-parda and Zarro-negrinha are the common seafowl during this period. Among other birds Ganso-comum, Garça-real, Picanço-grande, and Águia-rabalva are uncommon. Wintering woodpeckers like Pica-pau-cinzento, Pica-pau-verde, and Pica-pau-tridáctilo can be found most years. Some years Pato-preto, Merganso-de-poupa, Pato-de-cauda-afilada, Pato-fusco, Zarro-comum and Garça-real also winter. In the forest most of common forest birds can be found. During invasions Pintarroxo-de-bico-grosso and Cruza-bico-franjado can be found.
During spring most of the previously mentioned waterfowl become more common and in March many geese arrive. Larger amounts of Ganso-comum (100 at most), and Ganso do Canadá (100 at most) can be found. Often along it smaller amounts of Ganso-de-faces-brancas and sometimes Ganso-campestre, Ganso-grande-de-testa-branca, and even Ganso-pequeno-de-testa-branca (only very rarley). Among water fowl, Cisne-bravo (at most 300), Pato-olho-d'ouro (at most 300), and Marrequinha-comum (at most 90) along with smaller amounts of Pato-fusco, Eider-edredão, Merganso-de-poupa, Merganso-grande, Merganso-pequeno, Pato-real, Pato-trombeteiro and Piadeira. Uncommon ducks in the area are Frisada, Arrabio, and Marreco.
During spring many waders can be found. Most common among these are Perna-vermelha-comum, Maçarico-bastardo, Perna-verde-comum, Borrelho-pequeno-de-coleira, Galinhola, Maçarico-das-rochas, Ostraceiro, Pássaro-bique-bique, Maçarico-real, Borrelho-grande-de-coleira and Combatente. More rarely Fuselo, Maçarico-galego, Tarambola-dourada Perna-vermelha-escuro, Pilrito-comum and Pilrito de Temminck can be found. During perfect weather even Seixoeira, Pilrito-sanderlingo, Seixoeira, Pilrito-pequeno, Pilrito-falcinelo or Pilrito-de-bico-comprido can be found although these are more common during autumn (while still being very rare).
During this period common terns (Andorinha-do-mar-árctica, Andorinha-do-mar-comum, Gaivina-de-bico-vermelho), common gulls (Gaivota-argêntea, Alcatraz-comum, gaivota-da-asa-escura, Gaivota-parda and Guincho-comum) and sometimes the rare Gaivota-pequena is found. At bergafjärden notable breeding birds are Mergulhão-de-crista (some years, rare), Eider-edredão, Pato-fusco, Ganso-de-faces-brancas, peneireiro-de-dorso-malhado / peneireiro, Mergulhão-de-pescoço-castanho, Gaivina-de-bico-vermelho, Andorinha-do-mar-árctica and Andorinha-do-mar-comum. During early autumn large amounts of waterfowl, geese and waders can be found although these are often more numerous than in spring and arctic waders like Pilrito-falcinelo are more common during autumn than spring. Most waders are found during august.
