Just outside the village of Vegas Altas extensive rice fields start. The fields receive important winter concentrations of Grou-comum and several species of waders like Maçarico-de-bico-direito, Borrelho-grande-de-coleira, Pernilongo, Tarambola-dourada, Pilrito-pequeno, Perna-verde-comum, Combatente, Pilrito-comum, Maçarico-das-rochas, Pássaro-bique-bique, Narceja-comum and Maçarico-bastardo. During the migratory passages, you can also see other wintering birds such as Pisco-de-peito-azul, Petinha-ribeirinha or Escrevedeira-dos-caniços. Other birds you can spot in the area are picanço-real, Bengali-vermelho, Bico-de-lacre and Poupa. Also many wintering birds of prey (sometimes in high densities) like Tartaranhão-ruivo-dos-pauis, Tartaranhão-azulado, Milhafre-real, Peneireiro-cinzento, Esmerilhão and Coruja-do-nabal. Best times for a visit are winter and spring, from November to May. From June to October it can be very quiet on the fields.
