Despite its small size and strong anthropization, it has an important ecological value for the quality of the water and for having a great variety of plant and animal endemisms, with several species included in the Valencian Catalog of protected fauna species. It stands out for harboring the only world populations of 2 gastropods (Theodoxus valentinus and Theodoxus velascoi): an endangered fern (Thilyptes palustris) and also; one of the most important populations of a small endemic fish, highly threatened (Valencia hispanica), is found in the coastal wetlands.
