La Higuerilla is a great spot to look for birds of prey. In 2024 I found 3 different Abutre-preto nests in the oaks on the other side of the river, although some diligent scanning is required to find them. Also easily seen in spring and summer are Milhafre-preto, Águia-cobreira and Águia-calçada.
Be sure to check the riverbanks for fishing Cegonha-preta. On- and around the river Garça-real, Garça-branca-pequena and Corvo-marinho-de-faces-brancas are present most of the time, as well as Garça-roxa sometimes. Pay attention to the calls of Perdiz-comum, which often can be found in the scrubland or even crossing the road.

La Higuerilla is easily reached from Villareal de San Carlos. It is the third viewpoint (on the left side of the road) after passing the Torrejon-Tietar dam. You can park next to the viewpoint. Press P on the map for directions.
